You're getting $600 - what can you do with that?...you buy a pair of earrings
~ Michelle Obama, dismissing the value of the economic stimulus tax rebate
Evidently, Michelle Obama hasn't shopped at Target lately. I doubt she's been to the grocery store for the family's weekly stock-up in quite some time. And I don't think she's pumped her own gas in a while, either.
Yes, it's easy to drop $600 in a flash at a jewelry store, a posh hotel, or an upscale restaurant. But I think most Americans were heading in other directions when they received their checks. Like to the food store, the gas station, maybe the savings bank.
MO goes on to state, regarding the inconsequential economic stimulus checks, "not to be ungrateful or anything" (perish the thought), "but it doesn't pay down every bill every month."
Whoa! Is that what the government is supposed to be doing? Paying down all of our bills? In the long, imaginative history of campaign rhetoric, that one takes the prize. And throw in a pair of $600 earrings for the budget-minded lady.
